Garage Door Cable and Roller Replacement in Round Rock

Cable or roller replacement: $120 to $250

Two lifting cables carry the weight of a garage door, and when one lets go the door drops on that side and racks in the track. A crooked door with a coil of steel cable on the floor is the symptom. Cable replacement is $120 to $250, both sides, and the door should not be moved by hand until it is done.

Cables

The cables run from the bottom corners of the door up to drums on the torsion shaft. They carry the door weight that the springs are counterbalancing. When one breaks, the whole load shifts to the other side.

Cables fail at the bottom, where the loop sits in the bracket. Water and rust collect there and the strands fray one by one. A cable that is rusty, kinked, or showing broken strands at the bottom bracket is close to failing and should be replaced before it does.

The other common cable problem is a slipped drum. If the door hits something on the way down, or a spring breaks, the cable goes slack and jumps off the drum. It will not go back on correctly without releasing spring tension, rewinding both cables evenly, and resetting the balance.

Rollers and hinges

Each side of the door rides on five or six rollers. Builder-grade rollers are steel with no bearings and a short stem. After a few years they flat-spot, seize, and drag in the track. The door gets loud, jerks, and pulls on the opener. Cracked nylon rollers do the same thing quietly.

Hinges wear at the same rate. A hinge with an oval hole lets the panel sag and the roller tilt, which is how rollers end up popping out of the track.

A roller replacement on a residential door swaps every roller for sealed 13-ball nylon units with a long stem. Worn hinges are replaced at the same time. The difference in noise is immediate, and the opener runs with far less strain.

What the visit looks like

The tech releases the spring tension, replaces both cables, rewinds them evenly on the drums, and retensions the springs so the door balances. Rollers are swapped one at a time with the door down, so the door never leaves the track. Every hinge, the bottom brackets and the track bolts are checked and tightened. Last, the opener force limits are reset because a smoother door needs less force.

What it costs

Cable replacement or a full roller set is $120 to $250. Doing both on the same visit costs less than two separate calls. The service call is included when you go ahead with the repair.

Do not operate a crooked door

A door running on one cable can drop the free side without warning. The bottom bracket on that side is also under spring tension and should never be unbolted by hand. Send a photo of the loose cable and the drums above the door to (737) 345-3608, and the tech knows the drum size before the truck leaves.

Cable & Roller Repair questions

One cable snapped. Can you replace just that one?

We replace both. The other cable has the same age and wear, and a door running on one new cable and one old one will go crooked again.

What are the loose cables hanging by the door?

Lifting cables that have jumped off the drum, usually after a spring broke or the door hit something on the way down. The door needs to be rebalanced and the cables rewound, not just pushed back on.

Do nylon rollers really make a difference?

Yes. Sealed-bearing nylon rollers run quietly and do not need oiling. The builder-grade steel rollers with no bearings are what make a door sound like a train.

How long does the repair take?

Cables about 45 minutes. A full roller set about the same. Both together is usually under 90 minutes.

A spring that broke with the car inside goes to the front of the day. Call (737) 345-3608 and say so.
